to help you understand why you feel the way you do...

lets talk about the brain

This is the bit you know as you, the prefrontal cortex. It is your conscious part. The part that interacts with the world. The part we are using to be aware of in our discussion together today. It is attached to a vast intellectual resource, which is the main cortex of the brain. Now, when we operate from this part of the brain, we generally get things right in life. It will always come up with answers based on a proper assessment of the situation and it is generally very positive.

There is another part of the brain: This part is the original primitive part of the limbic system. The most influential bit of this area of the brain is the amygdala. This is generally referred to as the fight/flight/freeze area of the brain and works closely with two other very primitive parts:

The hippocampus: which holds all of our primitive and sometimes inappropriate learned habits and behaviours.

The hypothalamus: which regulates chemical responses in the body and mind.

So, let us imagine that when you leave here today you run into a polar bear.

What would happen?

Your anxiety would go up. You would lose intellectual control and move from the intellectual sensible brain to the primitive emotional brain.

You'd get ‘sweaty’, your heart rate would increase, your stomach would churn and you would be off like a shot. In these circumstances, this response would be entirely appropriate. You would be pleased. Unfortunately, it is the same in life when our anxiety goes up, and this can be a gradual process, we lose intellectual control and the primitive mind takes over.

When the primitive mind thinks that we are in some sort of danger or crisis it will react immediately with:

• Anxiety

• Depression

• Anger

All are primitive responses it can use to protect us.
